The movie Bluebeard's Eighth Wife was released in 1938 and starred Gary Cooper as Michael Barndon and Claudette Colbert as Nicole. The story is set in the French Riviera, where Michael, a wealthy American businessman, falls in love with Nicole, a young French woman, during a shopping trip to a Paris department store. He proposes marriage to her after a whirlwind romance, and she accepts.
However, Nicole soon realizes that Michael has been married seven times before, and she doesn't want to be just another ex-wife in his collection. She decides to play hard to get and negotiate a prenuptial agreement that will give her financial security in case of a divorce. Michael, who is used to getting his own way, is initially taken aback by Nicole's demands, but he eventually agrees to her terms.
Their marriage seems to be going well at first, but Nicole still feels insecure and jealous of Michael's past wives. She hires a detective to investigate his previous marriages and discovers that he was in love with all of them at some point. She becomes convinced that he will eventually leave her too, and she decides to take matters into her own hands.
Nicole comes up with a plan to teach Michael a lesson by pretending to be attracted to another man. She introduces him to an Italian playboy named Albert, who she claims is her lover. Michael gets jealous and tries to win her back by offering her a bigger allowance, but she refuses. She insists on staying with Albert until Michael learns to appreciate her more.
In the end, Michael realizes how much he loves Nicole and agrees to give her everything she wants. They reconcile and live happily ever after. The movie is a romantic comedy that pokes fun at the institution of marriage and the prejudices of the upper class.
