Dean and Cindy meet when she is a college student and he works as a mover. They quickly fall in love and get married, and have a daughter named Frankie. However, their marriage is far from perfect. Dean is content to work as a low-wage laborer and does not have any significant goals or ambitions, while Cindy resents her life as a nurse and is still haunted by her father's abuse.
Years pass, and the couple's relationship deteriorates. They argue frequently, and Cindy begins to withdraw from Dean, focusing instead on her career and her own desires. Meanwhile, Dean becomes resentful towards Cindy for rejecting him and starts drinking more. The couple even sleep in separate rooms. As they struggle to repair their relationship, Dean books a trip for them to a themed hotel, hoping to reignite their passion. However, their efforts to reconcile ultimately fail, and Cindy decides to leave Dean, taking Frankie with her.
The film is told through flashbacks, exploring the early stages of Dean and Cindy's relationship, as well as their current struggles. The contrast between their optimistic beginnings and their dark present highlights the ways that their choices and circumstances have eroded their love.
