Brooklyn's Smoking Hot Gossip

Comedy  United States of America

Blue in the Face is a 1995 comedy-drama directed by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster. The film is set in Brooklyn, New York, and is shot in a documentary style. The movie explores the lives of various characters who frequent Auggie's tobacco shop, which is due to close down soon. The film features a diverse cast of characters, including Harvey Keitel, Lou Reed, Michael J. Fox, Roseanne Barr, and Jim Jarmusch.

The film starts with Auggie (played by Harvey Keitel) learning that he has just two days to vacate his tobacco shop. As a result, Auggie is trying to sell off his stock, and the neighborhood regulars are helping him do so. The customers, in turn, start discussing a range of topics - from the history of Brooklyn to the role of smoking in their lives. There is a constant stream of small talk as the characters try to come to terms with the closure of the shop.

One of the highlights of the film is Lou Reed's appearance. He plays himself and is at the shop to buy cigarettes. Auggie tries to convince Lou Reed to quit smoking, but Reed argues that it is his choice. Later, in a conversation with a cigar-smoking Michael J. Fox, Lou Reed tries to explain why he should be able to smoke even despite the health risks.

There are several other notable moments in the movie. Madonna makes an appearance as a singing telegram, performing a rendition of Doris Day's "Que Sera, Sera." Roseanne Barr shows up as a customer who has a crush on Auggie. Woody Allen and Lily Tomlin also appear in small roles.

Blue in the Face is an unconventional film, with a loose narrative structure and a laid-back feel. The film is full of interesting characters and quirky moments. It's a love letter to Brooklyn and the colorful characters who make up its community.
