The movie Bloodworth is based on a novel by William Gay, and it tells the story of E.F. Bloodworth, a legendary figure in his small town in Tennessee. He left his wife and three sons behind forty years ago to pursue a life of wandering and drinking. Now, at the end of his life, he returns home to face the family he left behind.
His wife, Julia, is now a frail and sickly woman who spends her days sitting on the porch waiting for her husband's return. His sons are all damaged in different ways by their father's abandonment. Warren is an alcoholic and a womanizer who sleeps with all the women in town. Boyd is a bitter man who always resents his wife for leaving him for another man. Brady is a vengeful man who puts hexes on his enemies from his porch.
The only one who seems to have any respect for E.F. is his grandson, Fleming, who is a handsome and sensitive young man. Fleming sees the damage that his family's bitterness has caused and strives to rise above it. He meets Raven Lee, a beautiful young woman from another town, and falls in love with her.
But when Boyd discovers that his wife is having an affair with another man, the family's bitterness boils over into violence. Boyd sets out to hunt down his wife and her lover, and he drags Warren and Brady along with him. It is up to Fleming to break the cycle of violence and hatred and save his family from destroying itself.
