Blancanieves is a Spanish film directed by Pablo Berger, released in 2012. The film retells the story of Snow White, but with a twist. It is set in 1920s Seville, Spain and the protagonist is a female bullfighter named Carmen.
After her father, a famous matador, is paralyzed in the ring, Carmen goes to live with her evil stepmother, Encarna. Encarna mistreats Carmen and uses her for her own financial gain. Carmen eventually flees and finds refuge with a group of traveling dwarves who work in a bullfighting troupe.
Carmen begins to perform as a bullfighter herself, donning the signature white outfit and cape. She becomes a sensation and gains the nickname "Blancanieves," which means Snow White in Spanish.
The film is shot entirely in black and white with no dialogue, making it a modern-day silent movie. It features stunning visuals and a beautiful musical score by Alfonso de Vilallonga.
Blancanieves was well-received by critics and was Spain's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards.
