Blade Runner is a science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1982. The film is loosely based on the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. It stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a retired blade runner (a special police officer tasked with hunting down rogue androids known as replicants) who is called back into service to track down and eliminate a group of replicants who have escaped from an off-world colony.
In the film, replicants are bioengineered beings created for use in hazardous work environments and colonization efforts. They are virtually indistinguishable from human beings, but have superior strength and intelligence. However, due to fears of rebellion, replicants have a limited lifespan of only four years, after which they must be "retired" (killed).
Deckard's mission takes him deep into the seedy underworld of Los Angeles, where he follows a trail of clues and confronts the dangerous replicants one by one. Along the way, he meets Rachael (Sean Young), a replicant who is unaware of her true nature, and develops a relationship with her.
The film is notable for its dark, dystopian atmosphere and its stunning visuals, which have influenced countless science fiction films since its release. It was a commercial disappointment upon its initial release, but has since become a cult classic and is widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.
