Blacula is a horror film that was released in 1972. It follows the story of an African prince named Mamuwalde who visits Transylvania in the late 18th century. Once there, he seeks out the help of Count Dracula to help him end the slave trade. Dracula, however, is not interested in helping Mamuwalde and instead decides to curse him by turning him into a vampire.
Two centuries later in 1972, Mamuwalde's coffin is shipped to Los Angeles and accidentally opened by two interior decorators. Mamuwalde awakens and begins his reign of terror on the city. He attacks various residents including a cab driver, a nightclub singer, and a detective.
As he searches for blood to sustain himself, Mamuwalde meets Tina, a woman who he believes is the reincarnation of his deceased wife. He becomes obsessed with her and tries to win her over despite her resistance. Meanwhile, the police are hot on his trail and seek to put an end to his killing spree.
Blacula was a groundbreaking film for its time as it was one of the first horror movies to feature an African-American lead. It was also praised for its portrayal of racism and the struggle for black identity during a time of social upheaval in America. The film was successful enough to spawn a sequel, Scream Blacula Scream, which was released in 1973.
