In the movie Bionicle: The Legend Reborn, Mata Nui is initially depicted as the ruler of a prosperous universe that he governs with the help of his loyal followers. However, he is suddenly betrayed by one of his own, a jealous and power-hungry being known as Makuta. Makuta manages to trap Mata Nui's spirit inside the Mask of Life, leaving him adrift in space.
After a long and perilous journey, the Mask of Life finally crash-lands on Bara Magna, a desolate and hostile planet inhabited by various warring tribes. Mata Nui's spirit is able to create a new, biomechanical body from the materials around him, but he is soon ambushed by the Skrall, a ruthless tribe ruled by the brutal Tuma.
Mata Nui is taken captive by the Skrall and forced to fight in their arena battles, during which he meets a group of gladiators who become his allies. Together, they attempt to discover the truth about the mysterious Mask of Life and its purpose, while also fending off attacks from the Skrall and other dangerous creatures.
Along the way, Mata Nui learns valuable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and the importance of sacrifice. Ultimately, he is able to unite the warring tribes of Bara Magna and defeat Makuta once and for all, earning the respect and admiration of the planet's inhabitants and becoming a true hero in his own right.
