Drama,Comedy,Music  France,United Kingdom

Billy Elliot is a British film directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Lee Hall, released in 2000. The movie takes place in the town of County Durham in Northern England during the 1984-85 miner's strike.

Eleven-year-old Billy Elliot (played by Jamie Bell) is the youngest son of a coal miner, Jackie Elliot (played by Gary Lewis), who wants his son to follow in his footsteps and become a miner. However, Billy has a secret passion for dance, which he discovers when he stumbles into a ballet class during his boxing lesson.

Despite the ridicule and opposition from his family and community, Billy is determined to pursue his dream of becoming a professional dancer. He receives encouragement from his ballet teacher Mrs. Wilkinson (played by Julie Walters) who recognises his talent and offers to train him for an audition to the Royal Ballet School in London.

However, Billy's father and brother, who are both striking miners, are vehemently opposed to his pursuit of dance and see it as a betrayal of their working-class values. The tension between Billy and his family reaches a breaking point when his father catches him dancing instead of attending a boxing match.

Through Billy's struggles, the film depicts the impact of the miner's strike on working-class families and the wider community. It also explores themes of gender roles, homophobia, and the power and importance of art and self-expression.

Billy Elliot is widely considered to be a modern classic and was critically acclaimed upon release. It won numerous awards, including a BAFTA for Best British Film, as well as three Academy Award nominations.
