Deadly Dependence: The Miracle Madness of a Teacher

Drama  United States of America

Bigger Than Life is a 1956 drama film directed by Nicholas Ray. The film follows schoolteacher Ed Avery, played by James Mason, who becomes seriously ill and is prescribed the then-experimental drug cortisone. The drug quickly alleviates his physical symptoms and Avery becomes dependent on it to function normally.

However, as he continues to take the drug, Avery's personality changes dramatically. He becomes increasingly aggressive, manic, and delusional, displaying symptoms of psychosis. He believes himself to be a prophet sent by God to instruct others, including his own family, on how to live their lives.

Avery's wife Lou, played by Barbara Rush, becomes concerned for his well-being as he spirals further into madness. She attempts to get him to stop taking the drug, but he is unable to function without it. Avery's behavior becomes increasingly erratic and dangerous, culminating in a violent confrontation with his son.

The film is a commentary on the dangers of prescription drug abuse, as well as the societal pressures faced by men in the 1950s to be "successful" and provide for their families. It received positive reviews for its bold themes and Mason's powerful performance, but was controversial and divisive upon its release.
