After the chance encounter with Quantrell Bishop, Paul becomes obsessed with him and begins stalking him. He skips work and spends all his time tracking Bishop's movements and discussing him on a sports radio show. When Bishop is injured in a game, Paul blames himself for jinxing him and spirals into a deep depression.
Paul's mother and sister try to help him, but he refuses to listen and continues to idolize Bishop, even when he finds out that Bishop is not the perfect person he thought he was. Eventually, Paul's obsession leads to a violent confrontation with Bishop that forces him to reevaluate his priorities and his fandom.
The movie is a darkly comic exploration of sports fandom and the dangers of hero worship, and features a standout performance by Patton Oswalt as Paul. Directed by Robert Siegel, who also wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated film "The Wrestler", "Big Fan" was well-received by critics and is considered a cult classic.
