Beyond Therapy is a 1987 romantic comedy film directed by Robert Altman. The film is based on the play of the same name by Christopher Durang. The movie follows the lives of two New Yorkers, Bruce and Prudence, who are looking for love and end up meeting through a personal ad.
Bruce is a neurotic bisexual man who is living with his lover Bob. However, he is not happy with his relationship and is seeking something meaningful. Prudence, on the other hand, is a highly-strung woman who has also been advised by her therapist to try and find love through a personal ad.
Their first date at a French restaurant becomes quickly disastrous when they discover that they have nothing in common and their personalities clash. However, they agree to give it another shot, and they meet up again. Their second date goes much better, and they start to connect on a deep level.
Meanwhile, Bruce's lover Bob is not happy with Bruce's interest in Prudence and becomes jealous. He hatches a plan to break them up and hires an eccentric private detective to keep tabs on their relationship.
Throughout the movie, the characters explore their sexualities, relationships, and the meaning of love. The film is a witty and ironic look at modern relationships and the challenges involved in finding true love.
