The protagonist of the movie Best Sellers is a reclusive and cantankerous author named Lucy Stanbridge, played by Oscar winner Sir Anthony Hopkins. Lucy used to be a famous writer in the 70s and 80s, but she has not published a book in over a decade and has retreated into seclusion in her country estate in the United Kingdom.
One day, she is contacted by a young American publisher named Kate, played by rising star Odessa Young. Kate is desperate to find a bestselling book to save her struggling publishing house, and thinks that Lucy's name recognition could be just what she needs. She convinces Lucy to go on a book tour in the United States to promote her backlist titles and hopefully drum up interest in a new manuscript.
Lucy is resistant and difficult from the start, making life difficult for Kate and her team. However, as she travels across the country on a press junket, Lucy starts to open up about her past and her relationship with writing. Along the way, she meets a variety of people who have been inspired by her work, including a young aspiring writer played by Harry Melling and a transgender bookseller played by Katrina Lenk.
As Lucy and Kate battle various setbacks and challenges, including bookstores cancelling events and personal drama, they also grow closer and develop a mutual respect. Lucy starts to see the value in her own work once again, and Kate discovers a renewed passion for the publishing industry.
Best Sellers is a heartfelt dramedy about artistic passion, creative blocks, and the power of literature to connect people. It is directed by Lina Roessler and written by Anthony Grieco.
