Bequest to the Nation is a historical drama film released in 1973. It is based on the play with the same title by Terence Rattigan and focuses on the relationship between Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton during the Napoleonic Wars.
The movie is set in 1805, before the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson (played by Peter Finch), a highly respected and admired British naval officer, meets Lady Emma Hamilton (played by Glenda Jackson), a beautiful and charismatic woman who is married to the British ambassador to Naples. Despite the fact that both Nelson and Hamilton are married to other people, they fall deeply in love.
The film chronicles their intense and passionate affair, examining the political and personal ramifications of their relationship. Hamilton uses her charm and influence to help Nelson in his military endeavors, and their love for each other becomes the talk of British society. However, their happiness is short-lived as the war with France intensifies and Nelson is called back to duty.
