Bellflower is a 2011 American independent film written and directed by Evan Glodell. It follows the story of two best friends, Woodrow and Aiden, who live in a rundown neighborhood in California and spend their days building flamethrowers and weapons of mass destruction in preparation for an impending apocalypse. They are obsessed with the Mad Max movies and hope to create a gang called "Mother Medusa" to survive and thrive in the post-apocalyptic world they envision.
Woodrow falls for a girl named Milly and their romance eventually becomes tumultuous, causing Woodrow's mental state to deteriorate. Aiden also becomes involved in a romantic relationship, but his girlfriend cheats on him and he spirals into a destructive and volatile state.
As tensions rise between the friends, their dreams of Mother Medusa become intertwined with their personal traumas, leading to a violent climax. The film features a non-linear narrative, combining dream sequences and flashbacks with raw, visceral action scenes.
Bellflower is a stylized, gritty, and visually stunning film that explores toxic masculinity, friendship and betrayal, and the dangerous allure of apocalyptic fantasies.
