Belle du Seigneur is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Swiss novelist Albert Cohen. The story is set in Geneva, Switzerland, in the early 1930s and follows the love affair between Solal, a high-ranking Jewish diplomat in the League of Nations, and Ariane, the protestant wife of one of his employees.
As the passionate affair unfolds, Solal and Ariane navigate the complicated social and political landscape of Geneva's elite society, where their love is met with disdain and prejudice by those around them.
The film explores themes of love, desire, social class, and anti-Semitism, culminating in a tragic and heart-wrenching finale that brings Solal and Ariane's story to a gripping conclusion.
Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Solal and Natalia Vodianova as Ariane, Belle du Seigneur was directed by Glenio Bonder and produced in part by Cohen's own children. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and was released in theaters worldwide in 2013.
