Mason Skiles, played by Jon Hamm, is a former U.S. diplomat who flees Beirut after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Ten years later, he is called back to the city by the CIA to negotiate the release of a friend who has been taken hostage by a terrorist group. The mission is complicated by the fact that Mason has a personal connection to the group responsible for his family's death.
The CIA assigns a field agent, sandy Crowder played by Rosamund Pike, to be Mason's handler and ensure his safety. Sandy is working undercover at the American embassy in Beirut, and as tensions rise and the situation becomes more dangerous, she has to balance her loyalty to the agency with her growing concern for Mason's safety.
As Mason negotiates with the terrorists and tries to find a way to secure his friend's release, he is forced to confront the demons of his past and come to terms with the events that led to his wife's death.
