Craig Schwartz is a dissatisfied puppeteer who is struggling to make it in the world of showbiz. He takes a job as a filing clerk at LesterCorp, where he meets his attractive and sexually unsatisfied co-worker, Maxine.
Craig discovers a small portal hidden behind a filing cabinet in his office, which leads directly into the mind of John Malkovich. After the initial shock, he tells Maxine about the portal, and they begin charging people for the opportunity to be John Malkovich, sending them on a wild ride through his mind for 15 minutes at a time.
As the business grows, Craig becomes more obsessed with the portal, leading to conflict with Maxine and her lover, Lotte, who is secretly in love with Craig. As they battle for control, the lines between reality and fantasy begin to blur, and the true nature of the portal is revealed.
As the story unfolds, the characters become more and more consumed by their desire for control and dominance over others, leading to startling revelations and unexpected consequences.
