Eddie is a down-on-his-luck animal trainer who is struggling to make ends meet and support his young son, Billy. One day, while on a job at a movie studio, Eddie happens upon a large and lovable St. Bernard named Beethoven.
Beethoven has a natural talent for performing and Eddie sees an opportunity to turn the dog into a movie star. He coaches Beethoven on all the tricks he needs to know for an upcoming movie audition and, to everyone's surprise, Beethoven nails it.
The movie producers are thrilled with Beethoven and offer Eddie a job as the dog's personal wrangler. Eddie and Beethoven soon become inseparable, and the loyal St. Bernard proves to be a big hit with audiences everywhere.
However, trouble soon arises when a trio of unscrupulous ne'er-do-wells learn of Beethoven's success and hatch a plan to kidnap the famous dog and hold him for ransom. Eddie and his friends must work together to outsmart the criminals and rescue Beethoven before it's too late.
Along the way, Eddie and Beethoven form a deep bond and Eddie comes to realize that the true meaning of success isn't measured by fame and fortune, but by the relationships we have with those we love.
