Because of Charley follows two previously estranged stepfamilies who are brought together for an anniversary party in Central Florida. The families, who have had little to no contact with each other over the years, plan on making their visit brief, but their plans are suddenly changed when Hurricane Charley unexpectedly takes a turn towards their location.
As Hurricane Charley approaches, the families are forced to stay together in the home and ride out the storm. Tensions rise as they are forced to confront their pasts and the reasons for their estrangement. Old wounds are reopened and secrets are revealed, forcing the families to confront the issues they've been avoiding for years.
Despite their initial reluctance to be in each other's presence, Hurricane Charley becomes the catalyst for their reconciliation. The families come to realize that they need each other, and they begin to put aside their differences and work together to survive the storm.
