Beautiful Lies (French title: De vrais mensonges) is a French romantic comedy-drama released in 2010. The movie is directed by Pierre Salvadori and stars Audrey Tautou, Nathalie Baye, and Sami Bouajila.
The plot of the movie revolves around Emilie (Audrey Tautou), a hairdresser in a small town who receives a love letter from a handyman named Jean (Sami Bouajila), who is infatuated with her. However, Emilie is not interested in Jean and decides to throw away the letter. But when her mother Maddy (Nathalie Baye), a lonely widow who is still mourning the death of her husband, finds the letter, Emilie tells her that the letter is from a secret admirer who is deeply in love with her.
Maddy becomes ecstatic and insists that Emilie introduces her to the man who wrote the letter. Emilie, not wanting to disappoint her mother, creates an imaginary suitor named "Chéri" and begins to write love letters to Maddy. As Maddy becomes more and more invested in her imaginary relationship, Emilie struggles to maintain the facade and keep the lie from unraveling.
As the story progresses, Emilie and Jean become closer and eventually start dating, but their relationship is complicated by Emilie's secret, as well as Jean's troubled past. Meanwhile, Maddy becomes obsessed with her imaginary lover, putting a strain on her relationship with her daughter.
