Beat the Devil is a 1953 adventure comedy film directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, and Gina Lollobrigida. The film was written by Truman Capote and John Huston, and is based on a novel by James Helvick.
The film follows a group of international swindlers who are waiting in a small port in Italy to travel to Africa aboard a tramp steamer en route to Mombasa. Their goal is to lay claim to some valuable land in Kenya that is rich in uranium deposits. However, they soon find themselves embroiled in a series of misadventures and dangerous situations as they try to outmaneuver each other and stay one step ahead of the law.
Bogart plays Billy Dannreuther, an American con man who is the leader of the group. Jones and Lollobrigida play their respective wives, Maria and Gwendolen, who are also involved in the scheme. Other notable cast members include Robert Morley as Peterson, a British industrialist who is interested in the uranium, and Peter Lorre as O'Hara, a fellow criminal who joins the group.
The film is known for its witty dialogue, surreal humor, and absurdist plot twists. It was not a commercial success upon its initial release, but has since gained a cult following among fans of classic Hollywood cinema and film noir.
