Beasts of the Southern Wild is a 2012 independent drama film directed by Benh Zeitlin. The film is based on a story co-written by Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar and stars Quvenzhané Wallis as Hushpuppy, with Dwight Henry as Wink and Levy Easterly as Jean Battiste. The film was shot on location in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, with non-professional actors from the area.

The film was praised for its innovative storytelling, visual style, and powerful performances. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actress for Wallis, who was then the youngest ever nominee in that category.

The film explores themes of resilience, community, and family in the face of adversity. Hushpuppy and her father live off the land in a dilapidated shack in the Bathtub, a forgotten corner of the world threatened by floods and the loss of a traditional way of life. While her father prepares her for a harsh, unpredictable world, Hushpuppy imagines herself a warrior princess, summoning the courage to face down the beasts that threaten her home.

As the waters rise and the aurochs approach, Hushpuppy is forced to confront the limits of her own strength and the fragility of human civilization. With Wink's health deteriorating and her community scattered, she embarks on a mission to find her mother, who she believes may provide some sense of stability and belonging in a world gone mad.

Through her journey, Hushpuppy learns the power of compassion and the importance of interconnectedness, as she discovers that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, hope and love can endure.
