CC Bloom (played by Bette Midler) is a brash and ambitious aspiring singer from the Bronx who meets Hillary Whitney (played by Barbara Hershey) while performing on the Venice Boardwalk. Hillary is the daughter of a wealthy San Francisco family, but has a difficult relationship with her mother and a complicated relationship with her own identity.
Despite their wildly different backgrounds and personalities, CC and Hillary become fast friends and move to New York City together to pursue their dreams. Over the years, their friendship is tested by career successes and setbacks, romantic entanglements, and personal struggles.
Throughout it all, CC's tenacity and Hillary's quiet strength sustain them both as they weather life's ups and downs. Beaches features iconic musical performances by Midler, including the beloved ballad "Wind Beneath My Wings."
