The main character of the movie is Jerry, played by Jack Black, who becomes magnetized when he attempts to sabotage a nearby power plant. When he visits his friend Mike's (Mos Def) video store, his magnetic presence erases all of the tapes in the store. In order to avoid going bankrupt and disappointing their loyal customers, they decide to try to recreate the movies themselves.
Their first attempt is a disaster, but after realizing that their efforts will make their customers happy, they become more passionate about the project. They recruit other friends and neighbors to help them, and they start to feel like they're part of a community project.
Their videos become incredibly popular, especially with their elderly customer Mrs. Falewicz (played by Mia Farrow), who has memory issues and believes that the remakes are the original films. Jerry and Mike must keep up with the demand while also trying to avoid getting caught by the film studios.
