Battlefield Heroes is a historical action-comedy film directed by Lee Joon-ik and released in 2011. The movie is set in Korea in the year 668, eight years after the Battle of Hwangsanbeol. Baeksa (played by Jung Jin-young), the former prince of Baekje, is leading a group of rebels against the Silla-Tang Dynasty union. Despite their efforts, the rebels are failing to make any significant progress against the powerful union.
To turn the tide of the war, Baeksa comes up with a plan to capture the enemy's greatest weapon - the Tang Dynasty's treasured elephant. Baeksa chooses three unlikely heroes to carry out the mission - a careless archer named Nam-geon (played by Hwang Jung-min), a mysterious assassin named Sun-sin (played by Ryoo Seung-bum), and a bumbling group of soldiers led by a cowardly commander (played by Koh Joon-hee).
The four protagonists embark on the perilous mission, facing numerous obstacles and challenges along the way. As they journey through enemy territory, the group encounters a variety of colorful characters, from a band of bandits to a wise old monk. In the end, the group manages to capture the elephant and use it to turn the battle in their favor.
The movie is known for its combination of humor and action, making it a unique addition to the historical war genre. The actors garnered widespread praise for their performances, particularly for Hwang Jung-min's portrayal of the carefree archer. Battlefield Heroes was a commercial and critical success in South Korea, grossing over $32 million at the box office.
