Rice 9: Seeds of Ruin

Linda Watt, played by Brie Larson, is a dedicated scientist who has developed a new genetically modified rice species called "Rice 9". Her boss and CEO of her company, Gurgon (played by Donald Sutherland), is pressuring her to sell the rice in India, promising Linda that her invention will help put an end to world hunger.
Linda, who has never traveled outside of her lab before, is sent to India without any knowledge of the country or its culture. She is immediately struck by the vibrant colors, spices, and fascinating people she encounters. Upon arriving in India, Linda quickly learns that her rice will not only fail to help farmers, but it will harm them instead. The genetically modified rice requires expensive seeds and chemicals, and Indian farmers, who had previously saved and replanted their own seeds season after season, will be unable to afford it. Moreover, the rice was not suited to the climate and soil of several regions in India, which resulted in failed crops.
Linda struggles as she comes to terms with the damage her invention will cause and is emotionally moved by the plight of the farmers she had hoped to help. Meanwhile, Gurgon is pressuring her and her colleagues to sell the rice at any cost, despite knowing the consequences.
Throughout the movie, Linda is supported by a local farmer named Rajit (played by Utkarsh Ambudkar). Rajit is instrumental in helping her understand the issues facing the local farmers and gain a deeper appreciation for the country and its culture. Together, they work to find a sustainable solution that will be beneficial for the farmers.
