Barry's time in the British Army is filled with tragedy and hardship. He is granted a commission as an officer after saving the life of a superior, but is eventually forced to desert. He then joins the Prussian Army and is captured by the Austrians, spending time as a prisoner of war.

After his release, Barry becomes involved in a card game with the Chevalier de Balibari, who cheats him out of his money. However, the Chevalier takes Barry under his wing and teaches him the art of manipulation and trickery.

Barry rises to prominence in high society as a card shark and gambler, even marrying a wealthy countess for her fortune and status. However, his social climbing is short-lived as he loses everything and is forced to flee.

He eventually ends up in a duel with his stepson, who is defending his mother's honor. Barry is mortally wounded and dies alone in a boarding house, having lost everything he had gained in his pursuit of wealth and status.

The movie is known for its stunning visuals and cinematography, as well as its use of classical music as a soundtrack. It was directed by Stanley Kubrick and won four Academy Awards.
