Badlands is a 1973 crime drama film directed by Terrence Malick. It is inspired by the infamous killing spree committed by Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate in the 1950s.
The film is set in South Dakota in the late 1950s. Kit Carruthers, a young garbage collector, meets and falls in love with Holly Sargis, a teenage girl. When Holly's disapproving father forbids their relationship, Kit kills him and goes on the run with Holly.
As they travel through the Dakota badlands, Kit and Holly continue to kill anyone who crosses their path. They also attract the attention of the media and the police, making their way towards the Canadian border.
The film is notable for its unique visual style, incorporating natural landscapes and dreamlike sequences. It also features strong performances from Martin Sheen as Kit and Sissy Spacek as Holly.
