Marty McFly discovers a letter from his friend and inventor, Doc Brown, written in 1885, which reveals that Doc has been in the Wild West for several months and is living in Hill Valley. Marty decides to travel back in time once again to save Doc from an untimely death. He finds Doc, who has fallen in love with Clara Clayton, a schoolteacher, and is working on a plan to generate the power needed to travel back to the future.
Marty soon discovers that the DeLorean's fuel line has been severed, and they must find a way to get it repaired. Meanwhile, Buford Tannen, the great-grandfather of Biff Tannen, is causing trouble in Hill Valley. He challenges Marty to a gunfight and nearly kills him, but Doc saves the day by arriving on a steam-powered locomotive, which he had built in the 1880s.
As Doc prepares to leave for the future with his beloved Clara, Marty realizes that he has left behind a Clint Eastwood-style cowboy outfit that he had been wearing to disguise himself. He instructs Doc to go ahead without him and go back to the future without him. As the time machine disappears, Marty dons his cowboy outfit and prepares to face Buford Tannen in a final showdown.
Marty defeats Tannen and recovers the stolen DeLorean, but finds that the fuel line is still severed. He enlists the help of one of Doc's ancestors to fix the line and travels back to 1985. He arrives just in time to stop a parade, which would have led to Doc's untimely death. As Marty looks on, Doc arrives in a newly-built time machine and introduces his family to Marty. The movie ends with Doc revealing that he and his family are going on a trip to the future, to check out the 21st century.
