Babycall is a Norwegian thriller film directed by Pal Sletaune and starring Noomi Rapace as Anna, the protagonist. The movie portrays a harrowing story of Anna who is fleeing from her abusive husband and seeking refuge in a new place with her eight-year-old son, Anders (Vetle Qvenild Werring).
Anna is traumatized by her past and is always on edge to ensure her ex-husband doesn't find them. Thus, she purchases a baby monitor to keep track of her son at all times. However, she starts hearing eerie conversations through the baby monitor that don't belong to her or Anders, causing Anna to panic that someone within the building might harm them.
The eerie situation causes Anna to sink deeper into paranoia and anxiety. She befriends her neighbor Helge (Kristoffer Joner), who has a similar baby monitor and the two pick up each other's transmissions. Anna gradually reveals her troubling past to Helge.
As the strange events escalate and Anna's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, it becomes unclear whether the threats are real or merely a figment of her imagination. Eventually, it's revealed that Anna is not just paranoid. Someone within the building is spying on her and her child, and Anna must fight to protect her son from what's coming.
Babycall has been appreciated for its skilful portrayal of an anxiety-ridden person seamlessly blending with spine-chilling horror and mystery. Noomi Rapace's performance is praised for accurately conveying the psychological anguish and trauma of a survivor of domestic violence who is trying to overcome her fears.
