Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) is a successful and driven woman in her late thirties who seems to have it all - a great job as the vice president of an organic food company, a lovely apartment in New York City, and a supportive but quirky boyfriend named Rob (Greg Kinnear). However, Kate is also dealing with a deep longing for a child, which is complicated by the fact that she suffers from a medical condition that makes it difficult for her to conceive.
After a series of failed attempts at pregnancy, Kate decides to enlist the help of a surrogate mother. She meets Angie Ostrowiski (Amy Poehler), a loud and brash woman from south Philadelphia who is looking for a way to make some quick cash. Kate is hesitant to entrust her pregnancy to someone so different from herself, but ultimately decides to take a chance on Angie. The two women soon find themselves embroiled in a series of misadventures as they navigate the ups and downs of pregnancy and the challenges of their different lifestyles.
As the pregnancy progresses, Kate begins to realize that she may have bitten off more than she can chew. Angie is impulsive and reckless, and seems to have a penchant for making bad decisions. Kate also struggles with the fact that she is unable to control every aspect of the pregnancy, and is forced to rely on Angie's judgment and care for the health of her unborn child. Meanwhile, Rob begins to feel increasingly left out of the process, and feels that Kate is placing too much emphasis on the baby at the expense of their relationship.
As the due date approaches, Kate must come to terms with her fears and anxieties, and learn to trust in the people around her. She also realizes that her relationship with Angie has unexpectedly become one of friendship and mutual support. In the end, Kate gives birth to a healthy baby girl, and learns that motherhood is not about control or perfection, but about love and connection.
