The social worker in question is Amelia Donaghy (played by Monica Rodriguez Knox), who discovers the newborn baby in the nativity scene at her church on Christmas Eve. She immediately contacts the police, who send Officer Finnegan (played by Michael Morrone) to investigate.
As they work together to try and track down the baby's mother, Amelia and Finnegan form a bond that goes beyond just a professional partnership. They visit hospitals, shelters, and other places where they believe the mother might have gone, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, Amelia also struggles with her own personal issues, including her strained relationship with her father and her fear of commitment. Finnegan tries to support her as much as he can, but he also has his own demons to fight, particularly when it comes to his past experiences with children in the foster care system.
As they dig deeper into the case, Amelia and Finnegan uncover some surprising secrets that will change their lives forever.
