J.C. Wiatt (played by Diane Keaton), a successful businesswoman in New York City, enjoys her high-powered career and luxurious lifestyle. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she inherits a baby girl named Elizabeth from a distant cousin who passed away. Initially, J.C. is hesitant to take on the responsibility of being a mother while continuing her career, but she decides to keep the baby and moves to a small town in Vermont to start a new life.
J.C. struggles to adjust to her new role as a mother and manage her job remotely while living in a rundown farmhouse. She also faces challenges in the small town, where she clashes with locals and struggles to find trustworthy childcare. However, J.C. eventually adapts and creates a homemade baby food business, which becomes wildly successful.
As her business grows, J.C. is torn between her love for her child and her career ambitions. She is offered a new job in New York City, which would require her to leave Elizabeth behind in Vermont.
