The French Revolution of Taste

Comedy,Drama  Denmark

Babette's Feast is a critically acclaimed Danish film directed by Gabriel Axel and released in 1987. It is based on a short story written by Karen Blixen, also known as Isak Dinesen. The story takes place in the late 19th century in a remote coastal village in Denmark where two sisters, Martine and Philippa, live in devout austerity, giving up their own happiness in deference to duty and religious obligation.

The villagers are also devout, and the only entertainment in their lives is listening to the sermons of their father, a Lutheran minister who had founded the sect of the village. One day, Babette (played by Stéphane Audran), a Parisian housekeeper with a mysterious past, arrives in the village seeking refuge from political upheaval in France.

Babette begins working for the sisters, and soon, she becomes an integral part of their community. To show her gratitude, Babette decides to prepare a lavish feast for the villagers in celebration of the 100th birthday of the minister. The feast is a stunning culinary masterpiece, and the villagers are enchanted by the flavors and aromas of the food.

As the villagers eat, they slowly begin to change, and their rigid beliefs and prejudices are challenged by the experience. In the end, the meal brings about a kind of communion between the sisters and the villagers, uniting them in appreciation of the arts, of life, and of one another.

Babette's Feast is a memorable story of love, sacrifice, and redemption. It is a tribute to the power of art, specifically the art of cooking, to bring about change in people's lives. The film has won numerous international awards, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988.
