Azumi, directed by Ryรปhei Kitamura, is a Japanese action film released in 2003. The movie takes place in Japan during the Sengoku period, a time marked by civil war and political unrest.

Azumi (Aya Ueto) is a young girl who is raised by a master samurai, Gessai (Yoshio Harada), along with nine other orphans. Gessai trains the children in the art of combat with the purpose of turning them into ruthless assassins. Azumi and her companions grow up together and form strong bonds, but they eventually realize that they must fulfill their destiny and carry out their mission.

Their mission is to assassinate the warlords who are causing chaos and destruction in Japan. When Azumi and her companions leave their mountain hideout and venture into the outside world, they encounter a diverse array of characters, including samurai warriors, ninja assassins, and even a group of bandits. As they move through Japan, they approach each assassination with a certain amount of reluctance, as they must eliminate their targets in order to restore peace to their homeland.

Director Ryรปhei Kitamura fills Azumi with visually stunning action sequences, featuring complex camera movements, elaborate choreography, and intricate swordplay. The film also features a number of memorable characters, including Takatoshi Kaneko as the flamboyant and deadly Bijomaru Mogami, and Shun Oguri as the resourceful ninja, Nachi.

As the story progresses, Azumi and her companions come to question their actions and the ethics of the mission they have been given. Eventually, they confront the true nature of their orders and are faced with a difficult decision: continue to carry out their mission or choose a different path.

Overall, Azumi is a thrilling action film that features a compelling story and breathtaking fight scenes. It has gained a cult following and spawned a sequel, Azumi 2: Death or Love, also directed by Ryรปhei Kitamura.
