Ayar

Documentary  United States of America

Ayar is a poignant drama that explores the complex dynamics of family, identity and culture in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film centers around the character of Ayar, a first-generation American Latina who has been estranged from her mother Renata for many years. When Ayar returns home to reunite with her daughter, she is confronted with her past and the many roles she's been forced to play, not only as a daughter and mother, but also as a Latina woman trying to navigate her way in an often-unforgiving world.

However, when Ayar tries to see her daughter, Renata refuses to let her in due to Covid concerns, leading to a tense and emotional confrontation between the two women. As the days go by, Ayar is forced to grapple with her own feelings of guilt, loss and regret, while also trying to come to terms with the fact that her mother may never fully accept her for who she is.

Throughout the film, Ayar struggles with her multi-layered identity and the various expectations placed upon her by her family, society and herself. As she tries to reconcile the different parts of herself, she must also confront the harsh realities of the pandemic, which has upended her life and forced her to confront her own mortality. Ultimately, the film is a moving and intimate portrait of one woman's journey to find her place in the world and reconcile with those who matter most to her.
