Away from Her

Drama,Romance  Canada

The movie "Away from Her" tells the story of Grant and Fiona, a couple in their 60s who have been married for over 40 years. Fiona begins to show signs of Alzheimer's disease, and after a few scares, Grant realizes she needs institutionalization.

Fiona is placed in a nursing home called Meadowlake, and although Grant visits her every day, Fiona begins to forget who he is. She becomes close to a fellow patient named Aubrey, a mute man in a wheelchair whom Fiona meets at the home.

As Fiona grows closer to Aubrey, Grant becomes jealous and insecure. However, as he sees how happy Fiona is with Aubrey, Grant realizes that he wants nothing more than for Fiona to be happy, even if it means letting go of their relationship.

The film explores themes of love, loss, and the transience of life. It is based on a short story by Alice Munro called "The Bear Came Over the Mountain." "Away from Her" was directed by Sarah Polley and stars Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent as Fiona and Grant. Christie was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.
