Upon arriving in Budapest, Jimmy Race meets a local journalist named Mary (Mai Zetterling) who becomes his guide and helps him navigate the city. They witness a protest against the communist government and Mary introduces him to the opposition leader, Imre Nagy (George Coulouris).
Jimmy attends the meeting with the Hungarian ambassador, but it is cut short by the arrival of the secret police. Jimmy narrowly escapes and goes into hiding with the help of Mary and her fellow resistance members.
While in hiding, Jimmy learns that the meeting was about Soviet plans to invade Hungary. He tries to get the information out of the country to warn the West, but faces many obstacles and dangers along the way.
Meanwhile, the Hungarian government cracks down on the opposition, including Imre Nagy who is arrested. Jimmy ultimately succeeds in getting the information to the West and the movie ends with Nagy being executed and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 breaking out.
