Set during the Chinese Civil War, Assembly follows the journey of a soldier named Captain Gu, who is tasked with leading a group of soldiers into battle against the communist forces. During the battle, many of his comrades are killed, and Gu is the only survivor who knows what happened.
However, in the aftermath of the battle, the military leaders choose to conceal the truth and declare the operation a success. Gu is the only one who knows the truth, but no one will believe him.
Determined to honor his fallen comrades and seek justice, Gu embarks on a mission to gather evidence and convince the authorities to acknowledge the deaths of his fellow soldiers. This leads him on a dangerous and perilous journey, as he risks his own life to collect evidence and gain recognition for the sacrifices of his comrades.
Throughout the course of the film, Gu confronts both the physical and emotional scars of war, as he battles his own trauma and guilt over surviving the battle.
