The dancer in question is Qiao, played by actress Zhao Tao, who lives in the northern Chinese city of Datong with her mobster boyfriend, Bin. They are part of a criminal gang that controls the local coal mining industry. During a fight with a rival gang, Qiao uses Bin's gun to fire a warning shot, but ends up getting arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
Upon her release, Qiao discovers that Bin has moved on and she sets out to find him. Her search takes her from Datong to the Three Gorges region, a journey that spans several years and exposes her to the changing landscape of contemporary China. Along the way, she meets a series of interesting characters, including a sympathetic prostitute and a wealthy businessman.
The film, directed by Jia Zhangke, explores themes of love, loyalty, and the shifting dynamics of Chinese society. It premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and has won critical acclaim for its compelling performances, striking cinematography, and nuanced storytelling.
