Asakusa Kid

Drama  Japan

Asakusa Kid is a biographical drama film based on the life of Japanese filmmaker and actor Takeshi Kitano. The film was released in 2002 and directed by documentary filmmaker Yoji Yamada.

The story begins with Kitano dropping out of university and joining the Asakusa France Za, a performance theater located in Tokyo's Asakusa district. There he becomes an apprentice to Senzaburo Fukami, a legendary performer who teaches him the craft of being an entertainer.

The film explores Kitano's early years as an apprentice, his struggles with the entertainment industry, and his development as an artist. It also delves into the relationships he forms with his fellow apprentices, including the temperamental and talented Akiko, the flamboyant and ambitious Tokiko, and the stoic and enigmatic Kotabe.

As the popularity of TV grows, the theater industry suffers, leading to a decline in audiences. However, as Kitano and his fellow apprentices continue to work together and hone their skills, they become increasingly popular with audiences.

Ultimately, the film is a touching and poignant tribute to Kitano's early years as an entertainer and the friendships and experiences that shaped him into the beloved artist he is today.
