As Tears Go By is a 1988 Hong Kong film directed by Wong Kar-wai. The film features two parallel stories of Wah, a young gangster in Hong Kong who finds himself caught in two difficult and tumultuous relationships.
In one storyline, Wah is seduced by his cousin, Ngor, with whom he has a complicated and forbidden love affair. Ngor is a free-spirited girl who has traveled to Hong Kong from their rural hometown to stay with Wah and his close friend and fellow gangster, Fly. Despite being warned against getting involved with his cousin, Wah finds himself unable to resist Ngor's charms and the two begin a passionate and tumultuous relationship that threatens to tear them apart.
In the second storyline, Wah is forced to deal with the troubles of his triad brother, Fly, who is constantly in debt and seeking new ways to make money. As Fly's debts snowball, he becomes more and more desperate, causing problems for himself and Wah. Along the way, Fly gets embroiled in a mix-up with a rival gang and puts himself and Wah in danger, leading to a brutal confrontation.
Throughout the film, Wah struggles to navigate these two worlds of love and triad life, trying to keep each separate but ultimately finding that they are inextricably linked. As Tears Go By is a stunning portrait of the gritty and violent world of Hong Kong gangsters, and a deeply moving exploration of the complex relationships that drive them.
