As Cool as I Am is a coming-of-age drama based on Pete Fromm's novel with the same title. The movie stars Claire Danes as Lainee, the smart and witty teenage girl, and James Marsden and Sarah Bolger as her parents Chuck and Lydia.
Lainee is a bright and precocious teenager who is trying to navigate her way through life in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. She wants to break free from the life her parents have led and make a name for herself. However, her parents, who had Lainee when they were teenagers, are too busy dealing with their own problems to support her.
Chuck is a philandering womanizer who works at the local lumber mill, while Lydia is an alcoholic who spends her days in bed, nursing her hangovers. As Lainee struggles to find her identity and come to terms with her parents' shortcomings, she begins to realize that she doesn't want to follow in their footsteps.
She finds solace in her friendship with her classmate, Kenny, a sweet and sensitive boy who shares her love for literature and music. As they grow closer, Lainee begins to see the world in a new light and realizes that she has the power to chart her own course in life.
The movie is a poignant and heartfelt portrayal of a young girl's journey to adulthood, as she learns to navigate the challenges of growing up in a broken home.
