Arthur is a 1981 American romantic comedy film directed by Steve Gordon. The film stars Dudley Moore as Arthur Bach, a drunken playboy and heir to a massive fortune. Arthur spends his days drinking and partying with his loyal butler Hobson, played by Sir John Gielgud.
Arthur's family, particularly his mother, is fed up with his irresponsible behavior and threaten to cut him off from his inheritance if he doesn't marry the woman they have chosen for him, Susan Johnson (played by Jill Eikenberry). However, Arthur falls in love with Linda Marolla (played by Liza Minnelli), a waitress who he meets in a department store.
Linda, a struggling actress, doesn't care about Arthur's wealth and status, and the two quickly fall in love. However, Arthur's family doesn't approve of Linda and orders him to break off the relationship. Arthur is torn between his love for Linda and his loyalty to his family and their expectations.
Throughout the film, Arthur learns important life lessons about responsibility, love, and family. Ultimately, he decides to follow his heart and chooses Linda over his inheritance. The film ends with Arthur and Linda getting married in Central Park, with Hobson by their side.
Arthur was a commercial and critical success, receiving four Academy Award nominations and winning two for Best Supporting Actor (Gielgud) and Best Original Screenplay (Gordon). The film was later remade in 2011, starring Russell Brand as Arthur and Helen Mirren as Hobson.
