"Around the Block" is a multi-layered drama film that explores themes of cultural identity, family values, and the transformative power of art. The story follows the journey of a 16-year-old Aboriginal boy named Liam, who lives in the Redfern area of Sydney, Australia, which is known for its disadvantaged and crime-ridden community. Liam's mother has abandoned him and his abusive father pushes him to join a local gang, but Liam's life takes a radical turn when he meets an inspiring drama teacher, Missy, who encourages him to audition for a school play.
Despite facing racial prejudice, Liam discovers his talent for acting and finds a new sense of purpose and passion in life. However, his devotion to the arts creates conflicts with his father and his peers, who see it as a betrayal of his traditional Aboriginal roots. Meanwhile, Liam falls in love with a white girl, Sinead, further complicating his relationships with his family and community.
