Arn Magnusson is born in the year 1150 AD in West Gothia, in the Västra Götaland county in Sweden, into an aristocratic family. He grows up in the monastery of Varnhem as a monk and later joins the Knights Templar in the crusades as a warrior fighting to protect the Holy Land.
However, before becoming a Templar, Arn falls in love with Cecilia, a woman from a rival family. Their forbidden love is discovered and Arn is sent away to serve as a knight in the Holy Land to do penance for his sins. Cecilia is forced to live as a nun.
In the Holy Land, Arn becomes a skilled warrior and rises in the ranks of the Templar order. He meets Saladin, the Muslim leader, and gains his respect and admiration. Eventually, Arn returns to Sweden and reunites with Cecilia, who has been waiting for him all along.
However, their happiness is short-lived as their families are still enemies and Arn is called to defend his homeland against a Danish invasion. Arn leads his men in battle and is victorious, but he is captured by the enemy. He is sentenced to death by hanging for desertion, but Cecilia saves him by revealing the secret of their love to the king.
Arn and Cecilia are finally able to be together and live happily ever after. The movie depicts the struggles of love, faith, duty, and honor in medieval times, and the impact they have on the lives of those who live by them.
