Arachnophobia is a 1990 American horror-comedy film directed by Frank Marshall and starring Jeff Daniels, John Goodman, and Julian Sands. The movie begins with a scientist, Dr. James Atherton (Julian Sands), traveling to the jungles of Venezuela to search for undiscovered insects and spiders.
While there, he discovers a never-before-seen spider with a venomous bite that kills in just seconds. Atherton captures the spider and transports it back to his lab in California, unaware that it has laid eggs in a dead body that is also being transported in the same crate.
When the crate arrives in the small town of Canaima, California, the spider offspring begin to hatch and mate with the local spider population. These new spiders are highly aggressive and deadly, causing people in the town to become sick or die from spider bites.
Dr. Ross Jennings (Jeff Daniels), a big city doctor looking for a quieter life, moves to Canaima with his family just as the spider infestation begins. When people in the town start dying of mysterious spider bites, he realizes that he may be dealing with the same type of deadly spider that Atherton had discovered in Venezuela.
Dr. Jennings teams up with an eccentric exterminator named Delbert McClintock (John Goodman) to try and rid the town of the deadly spiders. They must navigate their way through spider-infested homes and buildings to locate the source of the problem and stop the spiders from spreading.
The film features tension-filled scenes where characters are chased by the spiders and attacked in their own homes. There are also several comedic moments, particularly those involving McClintock's unique methods of spider extermination.
In the end, Dr. Jennings and McClintock succeed in eradicating the spider infestation, but not before many of the town's residents have been killed. The film ends with Dr. Jennings and his family moving away from Canaima, leaving behind the horror of the spider invasion.
