In the movie, Appointment with Death, based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name, Emily Boynton is a cruel and manipulative woman who controls her stepchildren through psychological abuse. When she discovers that her late husband had made a second will that would have cut her out of his inheritance and allowed his children to be free of her control, she blackmails the family lawyer, Jefferson Cope, into destroying the document.

Emily then takes her stepchildren - Lennox, Raymond, and Carol - and her daughter-in-law, Nadine, on a grand tour of Europe and the Middle East. Along the way, she continues her psychological torment of the children, which includes humiliating Lennox by forcing him to publicly propose to his girlfriend, Sarah King.

The group stops at an archaeological dig in Petra, Jordan, where Emily's behavior becomes increasingly erratic. She becomes more paranoid and fearful, convinced that someone is trying to harm her. One night, she is found dead in her hotel room, with a fatal dose of barbiturates in her system.

Hercule Poirot, who happens to be staying at the same hotel, is asked by the local police to assist in the investigation. Poirot begins to dig into the complex web of relationships within the Boynton family, as well as the possible motives of the other guests at the hotel.

As Poirot uncovers more clues and information, it becomes clear that Emily's death was not a simple case of suicide, but rather a murder. The suspects include her stepchildren, her daughter-in-law, and some of the other guests at the hotel, all with their own reasons for wanting Emily dead.

In the end, Poirot solves the case, uncovering the identity of the killer and the motive behind the murder. The investigation leads to a final confrontation in the ancient ruins of Petra, where all the secrets are revealed. The movie ends with Poirot reflecting on the human psyche and the depths of human anger and despair.
