In Appleseed: Ex Machina, Deunan and Briaereos are members of ESWAT, a special forces unit created to protect the utopian city of Olympus from various threats. The city is home to both humans and their mechanical creations, known as bioroids.
As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that a group of rogue bioroids has begun carrying out attacks against the city, using advanced nanotech to wreak havoc. Meanwhile, a religious cult has gained a substantial following among some residents of Olympus, and their leader seeks to provoke a violent revolution.
Deunan and Briaereos are tasked with neutralizing these threats, even as they grapple with their own personal demons. Deunan is haunted by memories of her father, who played a key role in the creation of the bioroids, while Briaereos struggles with the physical and psychological toll of fighting in a never-ending war.
As the situation in Olympus grows ever more dire, Deunan and Briaereos must band together with their fellow ESWAT members to take on the enemy and save their home. Along the way, they confront difficult questions about the nature of consciousness, free will, and the relationship between humans and their machines.
